The performance 27.02. Marktplatz (Market Square 27th of February) forms part of the long-term project Tracking the Traffic by artist Elianna Renner. It is a co-operative art project that deals with the history of the trafficking of women as part of a larger narrative of migration in the 19th and 20th century. From the 1860s until the years of the Interwar Period, women from Eastern Europe – many of them from Jewish families – fell victim to international trafficking circles, that operated across several continents. Around the same time, the Jewish-European and non-Jewish-European women’s movement merged increasingly, joining forces to combat the international trafficking of women. The main focus of the art project Tracking the Traffic is to explore the histories of the migration of women, as well as the trafficking of women and its combatting by way of various artistic representations, and to recontruct the sites of these historic events, like the Bremen Market Square.
The performance 27.02. Marktplatz emerged from a workshop at the University of the Arts, Bremen (HfK) and was developed and realized in collaboration with Claudia Piepenbrock, Katharina Kreutzkamp and Lulu Mendelova, and HfK Bremen.
